Weight Loss Program and Nutritional Counseling

Weight reduction and management are key concerns for most Americans. Obesity is already at epidemic proportions and continuing to rise. The market place is full of "remedies" for this popular health issue. Unfortunately, many of the supplements, diets, and exercise regiments are ineffective. Many approaches range from mildly unhealthy to dangerous. Patients report symptoms from excessive flatulence to serious and permanent organ damage. We continue to look for therapies that are effective, safe, and also serve a secondary purpose of detoxification.

We have found that taking a balanced approach including diet, exercise, water consumption, meditation, etc works best. We use high tech tools, nutritional counseling, research oriented supplements and personal encouragement (counseling). Our approach is to customize a plan based on analyzing your individual needs. It is integrated into your overall health goals. We apply traditional internal medicine along with various holistic approaches to move you towards reaching your goals.

Preventive Medicine's weight loss program consists of using the Fat Flush Plan, a Body Composition Analysis, supplements, nutritional counseling as well as neurotransmitter and hormonal testing. We believe that good nutrition is the cornerstone of good health. Through education and supplementation, I recommend a thoughtful nutritional program to support your health goals.

Weight Loss Program

The Fat Flush Plan: the general philosophy behind the Fat Flush Plan is that most people have difficulty losing weight because of liver toxicity, water retention, and the effects of excess insulin resulting from a high-carbohydrate diet. The Fat Flush Plan is designed to support and detoxify the liver and to flush excess fluids from your body. The program is broken into three phases. The first phase is to jump start weight loss, the second phase is for long term weight loss at a moderate pace, and the third phase is for life long maintenance of optimal health and weight. Body Composition Analysis (BCA): is an insightful tool that helps the doctor evaluate the make-up of the body's water, fat, and muscle mass. For patients wanting to lose weight we measure your BCA at the intial visit. The BCA is a great tool to instantly gather baseline data to determine where excess weight is located. Once a weight loss program is recommended and underway we re-measure your BCA about four weeks later to see where and how your weight is shifting. This allows the doctor to identify other areas of concern that may need to be addressed. The BCA assists in evaluating the effectiveness of your weight loss plan and allows the doctor to make changes in your plan. When making an appointment for weight management please ask a staff member to also schedule you for a BCA prior to seeing the doctor. We will ask you to come in 30 minutes prior to your visit so we can run the test and have the results ready for your visit.

Neurotransmitter & Hormonal Testing: imbalances in neurotransmitters and hormones are common and often viewed as a factor in mood-related issues like depression or anxiety. However, their role in controlling the appetite center in the brain and their effect on feelings of hunger is often overlooked. Therefore, depending on the individual I may recommend testing your neurotransmitters and hormones as a part of your weight loss program. Neurotransmitters and hormones are chemical messengers in your body that affect your metabolism and help your body regulate the balance of calories consumed and calories used. Neurotransmitters such as GABA and serotonin are known to control appetite and food cravings for sweets or "carbs," while other neurotransmitters like epinephrine, norepinphrine, dopamine, and histamine influence metabolic rate, fat burning, and cravings for protein-rich food. In many cases these imbalances have contributed to obesity and weight gain.

Nutritional Counseling

Good nutrition is truly the cornerstone of good health. I believe that by changing our thinking and habits of nutrition we can regain control of our health. Our habits of consumption can be a powerful tool in living a more happy, healthy, and fulfilling life.

Nutritional counseling has several factors such as: knowing which foods are best for your health or condition, knowing how to select healthy foods(organic, natural, unprocessed, healthy cooking oils, etc), understanding ingredients and reading labels, and finally quick and easy ways to prepare delicious meals and snacks. It's easier than you think!

Read the article "Do You Know What You Are Eating?" by Dr. Rathod. This article offers some tools to make informed decisions at the grocery store. It outlines the major categories of additives that are put in food during the manufacturing process. The article describes the ill effects that some additives have on your short-term and long-term health.
